Searching for a church…
The Sunday after Easter Craig and I started looking for a new church home. This is a decision we did not take lightly. We struggled with this for several months before deciding to make a change. I have to say that I was looking forward to new opportunities and to meeting new people, but leaving somewhere I was “comfortable” would be difficult. I wanted a church where I could be involved in different ministries and a place my child could grow. We wanted a smaller mid-size church and nothing huge. We want a church that is still traditional in worship. We feel that it is important for our kids to learn the old hymns and not just the contemporary praise songs. We feel like hymns put the focus on what God has done and not on what God does for me. So many times I get caught up on “what’s in it for me?” mentality. The hymn “Blessed Assurance” takes the focus off me and puts it back on the Savior of the world. Anyway, so back to looking for a church. Each week we would look online to see if anything jumped out at us or to see what times worship services and Sunday School was. Not only are we looking for a worship service but a Sunday School class as well. As we have visited either we like one and not the other or visa versa.
I have learned a lot in the last couple of months. Here is one main thing that I have learned…WELCOMING VISITORS! I had no idea how huge an impact this has on a visitor. It is not fun to walk into a place and not know anyone. It is not fun to walk into a place that is practically empty and have to search for someone to help you. There was one church that we actually left before Sunday School started because it was hard to find anyone and when we finally did we were very uncomfortable. So we drove down the road
(thanks to our internet findings) to Church Street United Methodist Church. After asking someone where to go for a young adult sunday shcool class, we found a nice girl willing to take us where we needed to go. She encouraged us to come back and go to different sunday school classes to see what our fit was. At this point we had not gone to worship yet. After the class, we walked into the sanctuary. We had not seen the inside yet. This is a picture of it to the right. This was an amazing worship service. Being in a building this old and rich in history and tradition was incredible. We really felt like this was a place we could worship and honor God in our worship. We have been back three times and each time looked into different classes. The pastor is retiring in two weeks. We look forward to meeting the new pastor and hearing him. Please pray for us as we continue on this journey. It has been interesting.

It sounds like you might have found a “home”. Good for you. We know how difficult that decision was but God has a plan and He will place you where He needs you.
I think the Ambassadors are starting to come around. After you two left Tom/Kathy also left because of the time change. Brad/Casey/I taught a little but it was obvious a “real” teacher was needed. April stepped up and it seems everyone is a bit more relaxed. We’re planning to paint the room, hang white boards and curtains and take down the ancient artwork left by the little-old-ladies class.
If you can’t make it to CSUMC don’t forget your friends at FUMC. We’d love to see you both.
